James Louis Fortune Jr.

James Louis Fortune Jr., of Milton, Vermont, passed away at UVM Medical Center on September 16, 2026, at the age of 74. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma.

He was born in Burlington Vermont on February 26,1952. His nick name Pete.

He was predeceased by his father, James L. Fortune Sr., his mother, Elizabeth (Baker) Fortune, his grandparents, aunts and uncles.

James was a past member of the fraternal order of Eagles.

He was a volunteer Firefighter for Huntington, VT, as well as Underhill & Jericho. He worked at Bundy sewer, Winooski sewer plant, P&H Sansac, and delivered Burlington free press for many years.

He leaves behind his wife, Diane, who he married on October 16,1976. His brother, Charles Fortune, his wife, Janet Fortune, and nephew, Tyler Fortune. James has four children, Ruth McPhee and her husband Clarmont, Dee-Dee Fortune, Allen Fortune and fiancé Robin, James L Fortune III and his wife Holly. His memory lives on in his 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He has many cousins and very close friends.

He loved his dog cuddles and cat buddy, Butter nut. 

He was a jokester he liked to keep people on their toes. He loved his family with all his heart and soul. His laughter and smile will be missed by everyone.
